Angiogenic potential of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with high-grade gliomas measured with the chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane assay (CAM) Biol. Res.
Sinning,Mariana; Letelier,René; Rosas,Carlos; Fuenzalida,Marcela; Lemus,David.
High-grade gliomas are highly vascularized tumors. Neo-angiogenesis plays a key role in tumor growth and resistance to therapy. A cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sample could be a useful way to obtain pro-angiogenic predictive or prognostic markers at different stages of the disease. As a first step we looked for pro-angiogenic activity in the CSF of patients with high-grade gliomas. We performed the chicken embryo chorio-allantoic membrane (CAM) assay to study the angiogenic potential of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), obtained either by lumbar puncture (LP) or craniotomy from six patients with high-grade brain tumors (three glioblastoma (WHO grade IV), one anaplastic oligodendroglioma (WHO grade III), two anaplastic ganglioglioma (WHO grade III)), and four...

Anti-leishmania antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid from dogs with visceral leishmaniasis BJMBR
Lima,V.M.F.; Gonçalves,M.E.; Ikeda,F.A.; Luvizotto,M.C.R.; Feitosa,M.M..
Visceral leishmaniasis in Brazil is caused by Leishmania (Leishmania) chagasi and the dog is its most important reservoir. The clinical features in dogs include loss of weight, lymphadenopathy, renal failure, skin lesions, fever, hypergammaglobulinemia, hepatosplenomegaly, anemia, and, rarely, neurological symptoms. Most infected animals develop active disease, characterized by high anti-leishmania antibody titers and depressed lymphoproliferative ability. Antibody production is not primarily important for protection but might be involved in the pathogenesis of tissue lesions. An ELISA test was used to determine if there is an association between neurological symptoms and the presence of anti-L. chagasi antibodies in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Thirty serum...

Description of a widespread outbreak of aseptic meningitis due to echovirus 30 in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil BJID
Pinto Junior,Vitor Laerte; Rebelo,Maria Cristina; Costa,Eliane Veiga da; Silva,Edson Elias da; Bóia,Márcio Neves.
Echovirus 30 belongs to the genus Enterovirus and is widely associated with aseptic meningitis (AM) outbreaks. In Brazil epidemics due to this serotype were reported in several states but in Rio de Janeiro, before this study, it was only involved in sporadic episodes. We retrospectively collected data from AM notifications charts and enterovirus isolation database from Rio de Janeiro State Health Department (RJSHD) and Enterovirus Reference Laboratory in the year of 2005. An outbreak of AM was detected during March, April and May associated with a high cell culture isolation rate for echovirus 30 (17.4%). Male children with ages varying from 1 to 9 years were more affected. Of the 22 patients with confirmed echovirus 30 disease, clinical information was...

Evaluation of electrophoretic profile and albumin quota in the cerebrospinal fluid of dogs with distemper showing or not neurvous signs Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Gama,F.G.V.; Nishimori,C.T.; Sobreira,M.R.; Santana,A.E..
The electrophoretic profile of cerebrospinal fluid proteins and albumin quota was studied in healthy dogs and dogs with distemper in either nervous or non-nervous phases. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from 30 dogs were collected by puncture of the cisterna magna. The total protein content, the albumin quota, and the electrophoretic fraction of CSF proteins in agarose gel plates were evaluated. Results were similar in healthy dogs and dogs with distemper and no nervous signs, but were significantly increased in the group of dogs with distemper showing nervous signs. The study of CSF protein profile proved useful and contributed significantly on the detection of central nervous system disorders and damages to the blood-brain barrier during the nervous...

KOJIMA, Yuka; CHIBA, Shiori; HORIUCHI, Noriyuki; KOBAYASHI, Yoshiyasu; INOKUMA, Hisashi; 堀内, 雅之; 古林, 与志安; 猪熊, 壽.
S100B in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF-S100B) was measured in calves with 20 neurologic and 21 non-neurologic diseases to clarify its utility as a biomarker for neurologic diseases. The median CSF-S100B value in the neurologic disease group (43.0 ng/ml) was significantly higher than that in the non-neurologic disease group (10.2 ng/ml). As CSF-S100B levels in calves with neurologic diseases widely differed, the utility of CSF-S100B as a diagnostic marker for neurologic diseases in cattle remains inconclusive.

Fetal Cerebrospinal Fluid Promotes Proliferation and Neural Differentiation of Stromal Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Bone Marrow BABT
Shokohi,Rozmehr; Nabiuni,Mohammad; Moghaddam,Parisa; Irian,Saeed; Miyan,Jaleel A..
ABSTRACT Embryonic cerebrospinal fluid (E-CSF) contains many neurotrophic and growth factors, acts as a growth medium for cortical progenitors, and can modulate proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotential stem cells that can differentiate into several types of mesenchymal cells as well as nonmesenchymal cells, such as neural cells. In the present study, the effect of E-CSF on proliferation and neural differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) was investigated to test whether E-CSF is capable of driving these cells down the neuronal line. To verify the multipotential characteristics of BM-MSCs, the cells were analyzed for their osteogenic and adipogenic potential. Expression...

FilmArray Meningitis/Encephalitis (ME) panel in the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis BJID
Domingues,Renan Barros; Santos,Márcio Vega dos; Leite,Fernando Brunale Vilela de Moura; Senne,Carlos.
ABSTRACT The precise diagnosis of bacterial meningitis is essential. Cytological and biochemical examination of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) are not specific. Conventional methods for bacterial meningitis lack sensitivity or take too long for a final result. Therefore, other methods for rapid and accurate diagnosis of central nervous system infections are required. FilmArray meningitis/encephalitis (ME) panel is a PCR multiplex for simultaneous and rapid identification of 14 pathogens, including 6 bacteria, 7 viruses, and Cryptococcus. We evaluated 436 CSF samples submitted to FilmArray ME Panel. Among them, 25 cases were positive for bacteria, being Streptococcus pneumonia the most frequent (48 %). Among positive cases for bacteria, 60 % were positive only...

Fluconazole levels in serum and cerebrospinal fluid according to daily dosage in patients with cryptococcosis and other fungal infections BJID
Schiave,Letícia Aparecida; Nascimento,Erika; Vilar,Fernando Crivelenti; de Haes,Tissiana Marques; Takayanagui,Osvaldo Massaiti; Gaitani,Cristiane Masetto de; Martinez,Roberto.
ABSTRACT Fluconazole is extensively used for the treatment of candidiasis and cryptococcosis. Among other factors, successful treatment is related to appropriate fluconazole levels in blood and cerebrospinal fluid. In the present study, fluconazole levels were determined in 15 patients, 14 of whom had AIDS and 13 had neurocryptococcosis. The only selection criterion was treatment with fluconazole, which was performed with a generic or similar form of the drug. Fluconazole level was determined by high performance liquid chromatography and the susceptibility profile of Cryptococcus spp. isolated from the patients was assessed by broth microdilution. Blood and cerebrospinal fluid fluconazole levels were found to be related to the fluconazole daily dose, and...

Hematological and cerebrospinal fluid changes in cattle naturally and experimentally infected with the bovine herpesvirus 5 BABT
Lisbôa,Júlio Augusto Naylor; Isernhagen,Allan Jürgen; Borges,Alexandre Secorun; Amorim,Rogério Martins; Balarin,Mara Regina Stipp; Lunardi,Michele; Alfieri,Amauri Alcindo.
Bovine herpesvirus 5 (BoHV-5) meningoencephalitis is one of the main causes of mortality by encephalopathy in Brazilian cattle herds. However, the neurological signs observed are common to several encephalopathies and do not contribute decisively to a diagnosis. In order to verify hematological and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) changes, blood and CSF samples from naturally and experimentally infected bovines were evaluated. In natural cases (n=17), the samples were collected only once, and in experimental cases (n=7), the samples were sequentially obtained throughout disease progression. While routine methods were used to examine the samples, BoHV-5 infection was confirmed by a PCR assay. Blood analyses did not reveal any consistent hematological alterations...

Human immunodeficiency virus and the central nervous system BJID
Almeida,Sergio Monteiro de; Letendre,Scott; Ellis,Ron.
The pandemic of HIV/AIDS continues to grow daily. Incident cases among women, intravenous drug users and ethnic minorities comprise the fastest growing segment of the HIV-infected population, and the number of HIV-infected individuals over the age of 50 is growing rapidly. Today, the central nervous system and the immune system are seen as main targets of HIV infection. Significant progress in the knowledge and treatment of AIDS has been obtained in recent years. The neurological manifestations directly related to HIV are acute viral meningitis, chronic meningitis, HIV-associated dementia (HAD), vacuolar myelopathy, and involvement of the peripheral nervous system.

Increased levels of glutamate in the central nervous system are associated with behavioral symptoms in experimental malaria BJMBR
Miranda,A.S.; Vieira,L.B.; Lacerda-Queiroz,N.; Souza,A.H.; Rodrigues,D.H.; Vilela,M.C.; Gomez,M.V.; Machado,F.S.; Rachid,M.A.; Teixeira,A.L..
Cerebral malaria (CM) is a severe complication resulting from Plasmodium falciparum infection. This condition has been associated with cognitive, behavioral and motor dysfunctions, seizures and coma. The underlying mechanisms of CM are incompletely understood. Glutamate and other metabolites such as lactate have been implicated in its pathogenesis. In the present study, we investigated the involvement of glutamate in the behavioral symptoms of CM. Seventeen female C57BL/6 mice (20-25 g) aged 6-8 weeks were infected with P. berghei ANKA by the intraperitoneal route using a standardized inoculation of 10(6) parasitized red blood cells suspended in 0.2 mL PBS. Control animals (N = 17) received the same volume of PBS. Behavioral and neurological symptoms were...

Interleukin-5 and interleukin-10 are major cytokines in cerebrospinal fluid from patients with active neurocysticercosis BJMBR
Rodrigues Jr.,V.; de-Mello,F.A.; Magalhães,E.P.; Ribeiro,S.B.F.; Marquez,J.O..
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common neurological disorder especially in developing countries, caused by infection of the brain with encysted larvae of the tapeworm Taenia solium. Seizures are a common finding associated with this disease. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the correlation between the levels of various cytokines present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with NCC and the severity of the disease. The levels of the cytokines IL-1ß, TNF-alpha, IL-5, IL-10 and IFN-gamma were determined in the CSF of 22 patients with active NCC, 13 patients with inactive NCC and 15 control subjects. CSF from patients with active NCC presented significantly higher IL-5 levels compared to control subjects. IL-5 and IL-10 levels in CSF...

Laboratorial diagnosis of lymphocytic meningitis BJID
Almeida,Sérgio Monteiro de; Nogueira,Meri Bordignon; Raboni,Sonia Mara; Vidal,Luine Rosele.
Meningitis is the main infectious central nervous system (CNS) syndrome. Viruses or bacteria can cause acute meningitis of infectious etiology. The term "Aseptic Meningitis" denotes a clinical syndrome with a predominance of lymphocytes in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), with no common bacterial agents identified in the CSF. Viral meningitis is considered the main cause of lymphocyte meningitis. There are other etiologies of an infectious nature. CSF examination is essential to establish the diagnosis and to identify the etiological agent of lymphocytic meningitis. We examined CSF characteristics and the differential diagnosis of the main types of meningitis.

Management of acute viral encephalitis in Brazil BJID
Domingues,Renan Barros; Teixeira,Antônio Lúcio.
The appropriate management of acute viral encephalitis is a challenge. Clinical picture includes general symptoms and a wide range of neurological signs. Etiological diagnosis cannot be performed only by clinical means and depends on neuroimaging studies and cerebrospinal fluid molecular analyses. It is recommended since some of these viruses are treatable and that the prognoses of these infections depend on the prompt administration of antiviral and/or immunomodulatory drugs. The management of acute viral encephalitis in Brazil has some peculiarities. First, the etiological distribution of the viral encephalitis may differ from what is found in other countries. Some viruses, such as dengue virus, are more common in Brazil than in developed countries while...

HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is characterized by axonal degeneration of the corticospinal tracts. The specific requirements for transport of proteins and organelles to the distal part of the long axon are crucial in the corticospinal tracts. Microtubule dysfunction could be involved in this disease, configuring an axonal transport disease. We measured tubulin and its post-translational modified forms (acetylated and tyrosinated) in CSF of patients and controls, as well as tau and its phosphorylated forms. There were no significant differences in the contents of tubulin and acetyl-tubulin between patients and controls; tyrosyl-tubulin was not detected. In HAM/TSP, tau levéis were significantly reduced, while the ratio...

Physical-chemical analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid of healthy dogs submitted to different storage periods and temperatures Ciência Rural
Rosato,Paula Nunes; Gama,Fernanda Gomes Velasque; Santana,Aureo Evangelista.
Disorders involving the nervous system have a great importance in veterinary medicine because they have a high incidence and few auxiliary tools for their diagnostic, prognostic and evaluation of the employed therapy. Today, the diagnostic is based, mainly, on the patient history and neurologic examination. Hence, evaluation of the cerebrospinal fluid elements is one of the few alternatives to clinically access the central nervous system (CNS). Even with the great usefullness of the physical-chemical and cytoscopy exams of the CSF in veterinary neurology, there are few studies concerning the stability of its elements under freezing storage. The present study was aimed at verifing the influence of temperature and period of conservation on physical-chemical...

Serum and cerebrospinal fluid S100B concentrations in patients with neurocysticercosis BJMBR
Lima,J.E.; Walz,R.; Tort,A.; Souza,D.; Portela,L.; Bianchin,M.M.; Takayanagui,O.M.; Leite,J.P..
The clinical manifestations of neurocysticercosis (NC) are varied and depend on the number and location of cysts, as well as on the host immune response. Symptoms usually occur in NC when cysticerci enter a degenerative course associated with an inflammatory response. The expression of brain damage markers may be expected to increase during this phase. S100B is a calcium-binding protein produced and released predominantly by astrocytes that has been used as a marker of reactive gliosis and astrocytic death in many pathological conditions. The aim of the present study was to investigate the levels of S100B in patients in different phases of NC evolution. Cerebrospinal fluid and serum S100B concentrations were measured in 25 patients with NC: 14 patients...
